Lion Carving Mace Holder

Mace Holder

Next to the pillar beside the mayor`s pew is a carving of a lion with its paws held up so that when the mayor comes on an official occasion the corporation mace can be placed between the lion`s paws, with its base resting between the lion`s feet. The lion is sitting on a stylised barrel, part of the town`s coat of arms. Next to the mace holder the mace bearer has his own pew with one seat, which is just behind the mayor`s pew. The mace bearer`s wife has a matching pew on the other side of the aisle, near the piano.
